About
World Vitamin D Day takes place November 2 each year. This is part of Vitamin D Awareness month which was started by the Vitamin D Society in 2009.
The goal is to educate people on the importance of vitamin D for health and to prevent vitamin D deficiency.
The reason why the month of November was chosen was due to the fact that in the northern hemisphere vitamin D levels start to decline drastically in November. This is due to the sun being positioned lower in the sky and the UVB rays needed to react with the cholesterol in your skin to form pre-vitamin D are absorbed in the atmosphere and do not make it to earth. So November is the month action needs to be taken to ensure you are not vitamin D deficient through the winter.
Unfortunately in todays “indoor driven” society, many people do not receive adequate sun exposure in the summer as well and have deficient vitamin D levels throughout the year. So its important to know your vitamin D blood level or 25(OH)D level, and take action to ensure that it is between 100-150 nmol/L or 40-60 ng/ml (USA).
The World Vitamin D Day website was developed and is maintained by the Vitamin D Society, in Canada.
